The National Science Foundation has awarded a contract to Dr. Rose Gamble and Sentar Inc. to construct a technology to create education assessment rubrics given stated outcomes. The technology, called SALR (pronounced "sailor"), for Spiral Assessment Loop for Rubrics, will consist of a classification of outcomes and common rubrics, a many to many mapping between them, and a prototype system to guide educators and administrators to create and customize rubrics. SALR will lay the foundation for evaluating outcomes and rubrics, as well as reporting on the achievement of outcomes to produce innovative education-based software. This technology will usher in new methods of evaluation that will not only improve assessment, but will improve the overall educational experience as students have understandable, objective measures that indicate what is necessary for their success.
